Greenpoint Shul Hebrew School
The world stands on three things: Torah, Prayer, Acts of Kindness
עַל שְׁלשָׁה דְבָרִים הָעוֹלָם עוֹמֵד: עַל הַתּוֹרָה, וְעַל הָעֲבוֹדָה ,וְעַל גְּמִילוּת חֲסָדִים
(Perkei Avot: 1:2)

Curriculum
We offer an inclusive and engaging Jewish education for children of all ages and backgrounds. We also provide modifiable lessons on Hebrew language and cater our classroom to meet the diverse needs of our students’ observance levels. Our program is designed to foster a deep and personal connection to Judaism in a warm, artistic, and intellectually stimulating environment.
Inspired by the teaching from Pirkei Avot, our curriculum is built around three core pillars:
Torah
Throughout the year, we explore the cycle of weekly Torah readings, with a special focus on the books of Genesis and Exodus. We delve into their narratives and characters, encouraging students to ask meaningful questions: What can we learn from these stories? What messages do they hold for us today? How do these teachings relate to our own lives?
In addition to storytelling and discussion, we study the mitzvot (commandments) introduced in the Torah—analyzing their meanings and exploring how they can be observed in modern times. Our lessons are enriched with creative activities, including art making and interactive games, to deepen understanding and engagement.
Prayer (Avodah)
This section focuses on Hebrew language, prayer, and the Hebrew calendar, helping students build both practical skills and a thoughtful understanding of Jewish traditions.
- Hebrew Literacy: We introduce the Hebrew alphabet (Aleph-Bet), teaching students how to read, write, and develop basic language skills.
- Prayer & Reflection: Students learn key prayers, blessings, and songs while exploring deeper questions—Why do people pray? What is the purpose of prayer? Is it necessary?
- Jewish Holidays & Shabbat: We follow the Hebrew calendar, studying each holiday as it approaches and celebrate together. In addition, we dedicate lessons to the meaning of Shabbat and the importance of rest in our lives.
At the end of each session, we gather in the sanctuary for a song circle, where students learn and sing both traditional and contemporary Jewish melodies. By year’s end, they will have a rich repertoire of songs that connect them to Jewish heritage and community.
Loving-Kindness (Gemilut Chasadim)
This section is dedicated to Jewish ethics and moral responsibility—exploring what it means to lead a good and just life within Judaism and society at large.
- We discuss our responsibilities toward one another, our rights, and our duties, drawing from foundational Jewish texts such as the Torah, the Prophets, the Mishnah, the Talmud and Midrash, alongside other rabbinic and philosophical writings.
- Each year, we tailor these lessons to age-appropriate texts and themes, encouraging students to reflect on their role in creating a more compassionate world.
- Our learning is not just theoretical—students participate in acts of kindness and community service, reinforcing the values we study in meaningful, real-world ways.
