The Greenpoint Shul
Rabbi Maurice Appelbaum
As rabbi of the Greenpoint shul I see our
synagogue as a warm and welcoming space where
all who want to explore their Judaism can feel at
home. Everyone's Jewish journey is different. Our
shul provides an environment of encouragement,
excitement, and openness to each one on his or her
path. Our inclusive community includes Jews of all
ages and backgrounds and at all levels of
observance.
In addition to our Shabbat services (which take
place every Friday night and Saturday morning)
and our holiday services, the Greenpoint shul is the
site of numerous other events and activities. We
offer classes in beginner's Hebrew and Talmud. We
are starting a community garden where we will
grow produce for the local soup kitchen. And we
are hosting a 12-step-program to assist and
support those in our community suffering from
addiction. We are also currently building an eruv -
an enclosure that would permit carrying on
Shabbat.
Each month, on the first Shabbat of the month, our
morning prayers become a Learner's Service at
which explanations of the service are provided,
some prayers are said in English and there is a
greater emphasis on singing. Our aim is to make
prayer accessible to everyone who wants to
participate. Our synagogue is also very kid-friendly
so please be sure to bring along your children!
Rabbi Maurice Appelbaum joined our
congregation on September 1, 2009. He comes to
the Greenpoint shul with a wealth of experience
in leading services, reaching out to diverse
constituencies, and working with young people
and those with disabilities.
Rabbi Appelbaum was ordained at the Modern
Orthodox rabbinical school Yeshivat Chovevei
Torah in Manhattan. He is a native of Brooklyn,
NY, and after high school, he spent a year in
Israel at Yeshivat Ohr Hadarom in Rehovot.
Rabbi Appelbaum studied at Rutgers University
in New Jersey and at Brooklyn College, from
which he graduated with a BA in Sociology. He
has been involved in Yachad - The National
Jewish Council for Disabilities and has led
summer camp sessions for many years,
including a teen tour to Israel. While studying at
YCT, Rabbi Appelbaum interned at Congregation
Beth Tefillah in Paramus, NJ and at the
Abraham Joshua Heschel High School in
Manhattan.
Rabbi Appelbaum is joined by his wife Rebeccah,

Manhattan. They live in Greenpoint together
with their young daughter.
